Research Journal, Part 8: Types of Information: Focus on Search Engines and Web Sites.

Search Tool:

            Ask.com/webadvanced

This is a search tool and search engine I’m not familiar with. Advanced search features and functions seem to be very simple for inexperienced users. First search option, you can search for “all of the works or the exact phrase or at least one of the works or none of the works”. Second, you are given the option of the location of the work, in the URL or on the page. The last three search options are “Domain name, Language and Country.”

Metasearch Tools:

            MetaEUREKA

I like this search engine. When using me search statement and search the topic the result came back with relevant sites and information. One site was similar to ProQuest and had some great articles and research material. In the help section there’s a “How is this working?” explanation that I was not aware of but can be possible used in other search engines for more advanced searches. For example (from metaEUREKA/Help): blue tooth or +blue +tooth will retrieve results that contain all the words.
"blue tooth" will retrieve results that contain the exact phrase.
"blue tooth" -dentist will retrieve results that contain the exact phrase "blue tooth" and not the word "dentist"

ACADEMICINFO.NET

This search tool offers information sites pertaining to education and is sponsored by University's, students, teachers and others in the educational system. It’s very easy to navigate. There’s not much to the advanced search settings but all three search tools us the Boolean search technique and the quotations for matching phrases.
