Unit #8

Research Journal, Part 8: Types of Information: Focus on Search Engines and Web Sites.

Search Tool:

            Ask.com/webadvanced

This is a search tool and search engine I’m not familiar with. Advanced search features and functions seem to be very simple for inexperienced users. First search option, you can search for “all of the works or the exact phrase or at least one of the works or none of the works”. Second, you are given the option of the location of the work, in the URL or on the page. The last three search options are “Domain name, Language and Country.”

---

Metasearch Tools:

            MetaEUREKA

I like this search engine. When using me search statement and search the topic the result came back with relevant sites and information. One site was similar to ProQuest and had some great articles and research material. In the help section there’s a “How is this working?” explanation that I was not aware of but can be possible used in other search engines for more advanced searches. For example (from metaEUREKA/Help): blue tooth or +blue +tooth will retrieve results that contain all the words.
"blue tooth" will retrieve results that contain the exact phrase.
"blue tooth" -dentist will retrieve results that contain the exact phrase "blue tooth" and not the word "dentist"

Subject Directories

ACADEMICINFO.NET

This search tool offers information sites pertaining to education and is sponsored by University's, students, teachers and others in the educational system. It’s very easy to navigate. There’s not much to the advanced search settings but all three search tools us the Boolean search technique and the quotations for matching phrases.

Internet privacy
Working with Wikipedia for this assignment was very effective and simple. Using the research topic name that was supplied I entered it into the search area of the website. Then on the results page, there were several highlighted hyper links with key words that helped find additional information. At the bottom of each research page, everything is sited and there are usually many more sources for you to look up. I really like using Wikipedia for research and use it quite often when researching a specific subject.

"Safe Practices"

An Exercise

Summary: There are few intellectual offenses more serious than plagiarism in academic and professional contexts. This resource offers advice on how to avoid plagiarism in your work.

Read over each of the following passages, and respond on your own or as a class as to whether or not it uses citations accurately. If it doesn't, what would you do to improve the passage so it's properly cited?

1. Last summer, my family and I traveled to Chicago, which was quite different from the rural area I grew up in. We saw the dinosaur Sue at the Field Museum, and ate pizza at Gino's East.
~Answer: There's no need to cite common names of places of people.~
2. Americans want to create a more perfect union; they also want to establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for everybody.
~Answer: Certain works in this example were taken fomr the Constitution of the United States and should be recognized as such. For those specific words quotation marks need to be added along with citing the source at the end of the example.~

3. I find it ridiculous that 57% of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework.
~Answer: Since this example is using a stutistic then is needs to be cited at the end.~
Numbers 4, 5, and 6 all refer to the following passage from Martin Luther King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail":
You deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations. I am sure that none of you would want to rest content with the superficial kind of social analysis that deals merely with effects and does not grapple with underlying causes. It is unfortunate that demonstrations are taking place in Birmingham, but it is even more unfortunate that the city's white power structure left the Negro community with no alternative.
4. Martin Luther King was certain that nobody would want to be contented with a surfacy type of social analysis that concerns itself only with effects and doesn't deal with root causes.
~Answer: This seems to be the writeres oppinion but used words from the above piece and will need to be cited for those words. The writere and the writers work will also need to be cites.~
5. Martin Luther King wrote that the city of Birmingham's "white power structure" left African-Americans there "no alternative" but to demonstrate ("Letter from the Birmingham Jail" para. 5).
~Answer: This example seems to be write properly.~
6. In "Letter from the Birmingham Jail," King writes to fellow clergy saying that although they "deplore the demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, your statement fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations."
~Answer: The also seems to be writen in the proper format and the source would need to be cited.~
7. My friend Kara told me that she loves living so close to the ocean.
~Answer: This is common information shared umungest friends and wouldn't need to be cited.~
8. Americans are guaranteed the right to freely gather for peaceful meetings.
~Answer: This is an example of a brawed statment make from a common document and would not need to cited.~

Summer 2012-

Well, it's been a while since I've been on on blogger and set up an account. Several years ago I made an attempt to start blogging in the hope of using it to generate extra income using AdSense. Because of my busy life t the time as a stay at home dad with an infant, it was more challenging then expected and I was unable to get it off the ground.
Thanks have change a bit. There are several new features, settings and themes. At first I was a little confused but as I worked through it. Overall, it was pretty easy to set up and I'm looking forward to using this format. Using a blog will be a great addition to my future goal as a designed and will give me a change to display some of my design work. It will also be a great link for me to share on my facebook.
